This is a post about weight loss, and I'm keeping it real (as always...)
Unless you've been overweight (and being prego doesn't count), you don't know the feelings that overweight people endure in the simplest situations.
Can I fit in that seat?
Can I fit on that ride at Disneyland?
Will this bench break if I sit on it?
You don't know what it feels like to be "the fat friend". They don't call you that, but you feel it
And there is always the horrific event of shopping because you know that you can't go buy the "cute" stuff the others are wearing. Your girlfriends ask you to go shopping, and you just say no because the thought of them knowing what size you really wear would make you depressed enough to bake a batch of brownies and devour them by yourself. And when you do go shopping, you just hope to high heaven no one sees you and sees what size you are shopping for. But then one day, you let it go because you just accept that you are fat, and it is what it is. So you keep eating, and your vision of your self worth plummets.
If you are average size or smaller, you don't know those feelings. Some of you might be thinking "Oh Jolene, you weren't THAT big..." Yes, I was. I know how all of the above feels because I felt it for a long, long time.
That is not to say I'm a Miss Skinny now--HA--far from it! In fact, instead of being morbidly obese, I'm now just obese according to the BMI and Weight Watchers. I seriously have to laugh at that, and here's why.
We could add to that list of situations that an overweight person dreads: fitting into a shuttle van, in the back seat, 3 across. One year ago, not only would I have barely been able to squeeze past the second seat, I would have been scared to death that my rear would not fit in the open spot on the bench seat, causing those in the middle to be squished.
But today, I was in that situation, and I am happy to say that I glided to the back seat, sat down, and no one was squished. In fact, it was comfortable. I believe I even said, "Thank God I lost weight!"
My weight loss has certainly hit a plateau again. I'm stuck at the same weight and have been for about 3 weeks, so I've lost about 38lbs, and I'm stuck. But that's OK, I'm still running and cross training, still fighting injuries, and still hanging in there. Here's the deal: I'm not ever going back to the weight that I was. Honestly, I could be happy with the weight I am now. I'd like to lose another 12 lbs to make it an even -50, so I'll keep working at that over the summer. It's not going to happen by the half marathon, and that's OK too.
But for the first time in my life, I didn't give up when I have been presented so many chances to do just that. Praise Jesus that where I am weak, He is strong! I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me!
So even if all the work I've put in amounts to just climbing into the back seat of a shuttle van and not being mortified, in all honesty, just that moment alone was totally worth every minute of working out and every food choice that I made. It's a great feeling to just do what everyone else can do, even if it's just something as simple as climbing into a back seat.

11 Miles! Busy Weekends Ahead
I made my longest run on Sunday of 11 miles. It took me 2:20, and yes, that's 12:45 min/mile. On Sunday many people from my area ran in a half marathon, and I honestly wished I was running it with them. It was so fun to read their updates and hear their success stories, so if you ran this past weekend, great job! I can't wait to join that club!
I'm still dealing with this toe thing. Not to say I could immensely improve my time, but every step is painful. I have to stop once in awhile and just let the blood flow to my toes. I also decided to only stop for water twice: at 5 miles and 10 miles. I like that plan! Tonight I did 45 minutes of spinning, then I when I found out Kacie's game was canceled, I did 30 minutes on the elliptical. I feel pretty good, but I can't wait to put in 5 miles tomorrow if her game is canceled again. But honestly, she may have whatever this illness is floating around, so who knows if she'll be up to playing a game.
Back to running...As I was running, in the drizzling rain, I passed an older gentleman who was out for a walk. I had my iPod on, but I could tell he said something to me. I turned down the volume, and asked him to repeat himself. He said, "You never miss a day, do you?" I guess I'm well known in the neighborhood. In fact, I think the drivers in my neighborhood are the best! But having said that, my routes here are getting old. I'm tired of 10+ miles of the same scenery, but it's a safe place to run, and that's why I do it. I also explored a local high school's track on Saturday to put in 3 miles, and that felt pretty good on the knees too, so I may throw that in more. The bad part is that I can't count the laps! Thank goodness for Nike+, but I don't like measuring in km.
I have met some cool people on a local FB running group page (hi there if you are visiting from FB!) who say they will run with me, even as slow as I am. I am going to take them up on it one of these days because I just can't handle running the same routes all the time. But let's look at my schedule shall we? The half-marathon is in less than 5 weeks. Out of those weekends, one is a camping weekend, 2 are fast pitch tournaments. The good news is that one weekend I will be home (sort of) and hopefully I can get one of these awesome people to take me off of my well-beaten path.
Yes, I have one month, and I'm determined to make it. I will make it...by the skin of my teeth. Oh sure, I continue to battle injuries. Evidently I needed new shoes much sooner than I anticipated, so my knees took a beating. Finally, 1.5 weeks later, I'm feeling some improvement. Also, usually two days after a long run (8+ miles is the definition of long run for me) I usually have an ache in my legs on Tuesday. This week, not so much! But this toe thing...wow...ouch! Not sure I'm made for this, but I will reach this goal, and I'll go from there and make my next plan.
So as I go into this last month of training, I'd like to remind you that I am also fundraising for Love Without Boundaries. This is an awesome organization that provides surgeries to orphans in China. As a mommy to a boy from China who was once an orphan and received a surgery there, I can say that these are life-saving and life-changing opportunities. It's becoming just what I do!
If this is your first visit, welcome to my blog where I'm posting my ups and downs of training for a half-marathon in June, and at the same time, raising awareness of Love Without Boundaries and the work they do with the orphans of China who need medical care. I can't remember when or what I posted last, so here's a bit of a recap:
Almost two weeks ago, I ran 8 miles in 1hr 40 min. It was my first run beyond 1 hour 30 min since I injured my foot, and I'm happy to report NO INJURIES! So on this past Sunday I did what any beginning runner would do: I decided I'd run for two hours. I have a spot now that I stash a water bottle, so I stayed hydrated. I'd run by that spot about every 3 miles or so. My goal was time, not miles. As I started running, I was about 12 minutes into my run, and I said to myself, "Who runs for 2 hours? I don't..." But I did! When I met my goal, I went home, stretched, and I did what any good runner would do: I jumped in my car to clock my mileage. Now, my iPod/Nike+ said 9.57 miles. I didn't believe it, until I drove it. 9.6 miles! I was immediately perturbed. 0.4 miles away from double digits! I was screaming in my head. So this Sunday, my goal is 10 miles, and I won't worry as much about time.
On Monday I was off to camp with my class for two nights. I packed a bag for running, and I decided I'd do 4 miles, and I knew there was a section with some good dips and hills. The only time I had to do this was at 6 am on Tuesday. I set my alarm for 5:50, and I remember thinking, "I'm not getting up to run." I had worked myself into a frenzy that I could not run the hills and would have to stop and walk. Yet the alarm went off at 5:50am, I laid in my sleeping bag a minute or two, and the next thing I knew, I was up, dressed, and stretching next to my car...then my feet just took off running. That first hill was the worst, but I'm happy to say I made it the full four miles with hills, no stopping to walk. Again, I ask myself, "Who does this? Who gets up to run 4 miles before her class of sixth graders wakes up?" I guess I do.
I got home from camp on Wednesday, and my daughter has a medical issue I had to deal with, so I only had time for a 40 minute elliptical workout. Not great, but it was something, and I decided something was better than nothing. Again, I could have said, "I only have 40 minutes, so I'll just skip it." But again...I didn't make an excuse.
Today after work I was exhausted. I really needed to just come home, curl up on the couch, and go to sleep early. But I needed to go the Y first and do some weights (that I haven't done in over a week) and then run 3 miles. Wait, no, I hit 3 miles, and thought, hey, I'll run 4 miles, and I did it in 45 mintues, or 11:10 per mile, which for me is a good 5K pace that I hope to make a 10K pace soon. Who does this? Who thinks about pacing for different distances? Wasn't it just a few months ago that if I could run 4 miles in 52 minutes I was jumping for joy, and had total loss of breath? That was me...then.
This is me now. I don't make up excuses, I just find the time. Are there days I can't get a workout in? Sure, and like the 40 min elliptical day, that wasn't the plan...but it's what I had time for, so it's what I did. I also plan days off, like after the long run. The goal was to do a weight workout the day after the long run, but due to being at camp, I didn't get a chance this week. I also didn't get a spin class in like I normally do, but I did something!
I have to admit, I don't know this person. I can't figure out when it happened, but it has happened. Working out and running are just what I do. I'm listening to my body so I don't over do it. And I don't look forward to running ten miles on Sunday to be honest. But I'll do it...for whatever reason, I'll lace up my shoes, get the iPod set, and off I will go. It will be at least 6pm because I'll be getting home from a weekend of fastpitch, but again, I'll do it because now, it's just what I do.
If you are struggling with weight, finding time, finding energy, I can only speak from my experience. My experience is that you have to be in a place in your life where it just works. Last year at this time, I wasn't there mentally to do this. When I started exercising in August, it wasn't really to make this sweeping change. I just kept at it, and it has snowballed into -36lbs, down clothing sizes, increased energy, and a clear mind. All you have to do is keep at it. If I can do it, so can you!

Progress, and how I'm trying to be OK with it
Let's face it: we all have to start somewhere.
I am not the fastest. I always have been slow, and today, that is no exception. When I was growing up playing sports, it was about who was fast, who was strong...I could hang in there, but I was not quick by any stretch of the imagination. I think the missing component was the idea of "life-long fitness". When I got to college, I saw people of all shapes and sizes who would go out for a walk, or even go running, or go work out. Those were new ideas for me, so I tried it. I did find that I enjoyed it, but life in college is full of transitions and new beginnings, so anytime I would start a routine, it would end soon due to moving, change in classes, etc...
I got married at age 23, and I can honestly tell you that since then, I tried once to get in shape; and it lasted about 3-5 months. I think I was 32 years old and Kacie was 5. All the while I was trying to get pregnant, so I was afraid that exercise would affect my chance at getting pregnant. Stupid, right? After that we began the adoption process, where I proceeded to gain a bit more weight. And then...I hit my all time high in weight last summer (sorry, not ready to share that number just yet!) other than when I was prego. So I started to exercise last August. I started exercising, walking, attempting to jog, elliptical...trying to find my niche in the exercise world. It was hard, but I knew it was time.
I will never forget the first night in January (yes, I ran in the dark) I put two miles together. I was so proud of myself! It was 2 miles, back to back, in a row. And those two miles took me 27 minutes to complete. Even though I was so happy about my two miles, I was embarrassed that I was so slow. I look back on that and think, WHY? I did it! I was making progress. As a teacher, I tell my students that it's OK to be at different places in our rate of learning. Now I have to take that pill and swallow it, and it doesn't go down easy.
So with that, I'm going to share some times I've never shared, and I'm doing this to show others that it doesn't matter really because you are where you are, and you can't make growth if you don't analyze where you are and where you want to go.
Last Saturday, I ran my first 5K, and my time was 35:15. Not bad for my first race, but definitely on the slower side. But now I have something to compare to. So the other day I ran 3 miles, and I did it in 33:20. Improvement! And I'm feeling the difference in pace too. If I'm only running three miles (did you read that...ONLY 3 miles...3 months ago I was celebrating 2 miles), I can see a quick end in sight.
Today, I set a new personal best: 8 miles! And my time was 1 hour 40 min. I stopped three times, but the first two are legit: #1: I had a rock in my shoe. #2: I stashed a water bottle, so I stopped for drink at 40 min. #3: I do have a problem with my toes tingling and numbness, so at about 6.25 miles I had to stop to get the blood flowing back to my toes. That last stop was probably a few minutes. Now I know that's slow, I get that. But again, if you would have told me that I would run 8 miles 3 months ago, I'd have said, "No, I'll be happy with 3 miles." So again, I have a new mark to judge myself from. I set out to stay on my feet for 1 hour 45 min. I did that, so I reached my goal. I had no idea how many miles I'd do. When I realized I was at 8 miles, I decided to call it good, go get my stashed water bottle, and head home. Another victory is that for the moment, my feet feel good, but I won't know until tomorrow how my ankles will feel. I iced my knees as soon as I got home. So my time was about 12:35 per mile. That is also a major improvement from my 13-14 min miles back in January. If I didn't have the toe numbness, I probably could improve that time, but I get one body and I have to deal with it. Now next weekend, I have to do a long run of 2 hours. I'm hoping to get 9 miles out of it. I'm also looking forward to my orthotics coming in and seeing if those help my back/ankles/toes.
So my progress is just that...my progress. There will always be people out there who are faster, can run farther, etc...so this is where I am in my journey. I still think 8 miles is pretty darn good, and if I can do it, anyone can! Also, my total weight loss is now -35 lbs! I am still overweight for sure, but hopefully I can lose another 10 before the half marathon (which is in two months!); and I'll still be overweight, but that's OK...because it's progress! I am trying to embrace the idea of fitness and how it "fits" into my life. I have this great goal of the half marathon now. I'm not sure what my new goal will be after that, but for now, I'm just trying to do the best that Jolene can do!

My first 5K!
Well, I've cried 4 times today, which is more than I've cried in two months.
I showed up to my 5K event at about 8:30 this morning, and it was colder outside than was expected. The race itself was great. Fewer people turned out than I had anticipated, but it's in its second year, so hopefully more will turn out in the future. It's called "Cure the Kids" and it's for the Seattle Children's Foundation. Anyway, the course was a loop, so two loops was 5K. I had expected sidewalks, streets, maybe a lap around the campus of St. Martin's University. What I didn't expect was different terrains: grass, gravel, a trail, all in addition to the pavement. There was one good hill, so of course I got to do that twice :)
So my first cry was within the first mile when I realized I am running in a 5K. I know 3 miles really isn't a big deal, and I certainly wasn't running it to win, but if you knew me a year ago, or heck even 9 months ago, you'd know that this was NOT on my agenda or things-to-do list. And I don't even think it's about excuses. Sure I had plenty, and I will still tell you they were legit. I was busy. I was tired. But most importantly, I didn't want to exercise. Straight up...I wasn't ready to do it. Yet today, April 14, 2012, I was running a 5K. The emotion caught up with me, and suddenly tears were streaking down my face. Then I thought to myself, Oh crap, there's people up there, and they are going to think I'm already tired or hurt. So I brushed the tears away, put on a big smile, and continued on. My time is certainly nothing to brag about, but I think for my first race, the terrain, and the fact that I'm still overweight, I'm pretty happy that I just ran it, and that my injuries didn't prevent me from getting to the starting line. And my foot feels pretty good too!
After the race I went and watched one of my students play baseball for awhile, then I went shopping, and it was during this shopping trip I had my second cry of the day. I tried on clothes, and I am down at least one size or more from where I was 8 months ago. I can shop in the regular section of a store. Not the women's section...not the XXL or 1X or 2X...nope, I can wear regular sized jeans and I can try on any shirt in the store. Is the jeans size still huge? Of course...but I can go to the rack that has all the other sizes on it, and I can fit into them. Yep, I cried, and I spent money today, because darn it, those clothes fit!
So I drove home feeling so awesome about my day. I had a blast at the run, and I'm loving shopping again.
I was cooking an early dinner, and the chicken was in the oven and the potatoes were on the stove in boiling water--both about finished when I heard a loud "POP" sound. My husband and I ran to the stove. After debating, we realized it's dead. We are getting ready to do a kitchen remodel, and a new range was not in the budget. Now it is. And that was my third cry of the day because I hate being in debt.
And the last cry of the day? Well, that one is personal, so I won't share it, but let's just say that for as awesome as the first half of the day was, the second half was as equally awful. I really can't wait to get to church tomorrow. God often has a way of speaking to me during worship, and it helps me to understand what I'm going through.
Next steps? I'm going to try a longer run/walk tomorrow. I've got to increase my time, but when I do, that's when the foot/ankle injuries kick in. So I'm thinking I'll just add walking to the running. I hope it works!

I showed up to my 5K event at about 8:30 this morning, and it was colder outside than was expected. The race itself was great. Fewer people turned out than I had anticipated, but it's in its second year, so hopefully more will turn out in the future. It's called "Cure the Kids" and it's for the Seattle Children's Foundation. Anyway, the course was a loop, so two loops was 5K. I had expected sidewalks, streets, maybe a lap around the campus of St. Martin's University. What I didn't expect was different terrains: grass, gravel, a trail, all in addition to the pavement. There was one good hill, so of course I got to do that twice :)
So my first cry was within the first mile when I realized I am running in a 5K. I know 3 miles really isn't a big deal, and I certainly wasn't running it to win, but if you knew me a year ago, or heck even 9 months ago, you'd know that this was NOT on my agenda or things-to-do list. And I don't even think it's about excuses. Sure I had plenty, and I will still tell you they were legit. I was busy. I was tired. But most importantly, I didn't want to exercise. Update--the good, the bad, and the ugly
I can't tell it in that order though, so we'll go backward:
THE UGLY: I did the St Patrick's Day Dash in Seattle on March 17th--WITH THE FLU. No kidding. I got sick on the 15th at school, and by that night I had a 101 temp and throwing up. I took the next day off school (and I never stay home sick), but we already had a baby sitter, and the temp seemed to have subsided, so my husband and I fled to Seattle. My rationale: I can be sick in a hotel room just as easily as I can at home. And that's what I did. The night before the race, I ate a salad, and I was upset because my body was so weak, I didn't know if I'd be able to run the 4 miles. When I woke up the next morning, I didn't know if I could WALK the four miles! But we did it. I tried to run but I was to tired. I did walk it, but at the end I was freezing and it began raining, then snowing! We went back to the hotel, where I proceeded to have a temp and chills the rest of the day. Bummer...
Oh well, there's always the 5K in Hoquiam on April 7th, right? So I thought....
THE BAD: I was debating whether or not to do a 5K or 10K at a race in my area. I had finally resigned to the do the 5K, and I was excited. On April 1st, I went out for a 7 mile run. Really, all I did was add 10 minutes to my previous long run. When I got home I got ready for church, and I could feel something pulling in my foot. By that evening, we were out at the beach at a hotel for a few days, and I could barely walk the halls. I was sure I had pulled something in my foot. Not good. And sadly, day after day, it did not get much better. I did the elliptical on Monday, Tuesday, and then Thursday came...
By this time, I decided I would not be doing the Hoquiam run. I was at the Y working out, doing the nautilus machines, and I was doing the one that works your abs. I forgot that I had been skipping that machine for the last week or two, and I put my normal weight on it, and after I finished my third set, when I stood up my legs almost gave out on me, and I felt a pull in my lower back like no other pain I've ever felt. I walked out to the bench, sat down, and thought, "What the hell have I done this time?" Sorry for the swearing...but just being honest--those were the words my brain produced. So I walked, you know the whole "Walk it off" routine...and although it still hurt, I proceeded to do an hour on an elliptical-ish machine (not sure what it is, but I only use it when I'm hurt). Well, let's just say I spent the next two days on the couch or in bed with ice on my back. I took this as a sign that God was going to see to it that I rested my foot.
By Monday, my foot felt great and my back was at about 85%. I was feeling up to trying to run, and I did. I jogged 3 miles and walked 1. OK, that's good, right? Except my foot decided it wasn't done being aggravated...grrrr...
So I won't bore you with the rest of my week, but lets just say I have my theories, and I'm working through it. My foot WILL heal. I haven't hit the weights this week, as I have been letting my back heal and I didn't want to injure it further. I did run on Wed, and Tues/Thurs were elliptical and spinning (see, I just bored you with my workouts, sorry).
I was starting to feel a bit jinxed about races, but I really need to get a race (or more) under my belt before the 1/2 marathon, which is only 2 months away--eek!
THE GOOD: There is a lot of good!
1. I had already signed up for a 5K for Saturday, and I'm going to do it. It's Cure the Kids, and it's for the Seattle Children's Foundation. Seattle Children's Hospital is the same hospital my son Tyson goes to for his cranio-facial team for his cleft lip/palate. I saw this race and just felt I had to do it. I am not working out tomorrow, so I WILL make it to this starting line.
2. I am getting fitted for orthotics on Tuesday. I feel like a wimp admitting that, but I also hope it will help my foot and keep me going for many years to come.
3. I'm still exercising. Yes, me...I'm still doing it. 9 months straight, which is a total record for me. I haven't lost any lbs recently, but my total is -32 lbs (on a good day of course LOL). Maybe it's another plateau, maybe it's muscle, or maybe it's the popcorn I still eat at night. But I am still exercising.
4. I played pickle ball today with my sixth graders in PE. I do that every year, but this year, it just felt different--it felt good! I need to do that more often!
5. And of course, the 1/2 marathon...
I have really been struggling with these injuries. I feel like my training isn't where it needs to be. In fact, I know it's not where it needs to be. And you know what? That is OK! On one hand, I feel like I'm not going to meet my goal of running the entire 13.1 miles. It's looking like I will probably end up walking part of it. But at the same time, I HAVE NOT QUIT! I set a goal, and I'm doing the best I can to make it. Sure, now I have to tweak that goal a bit, but I will run in that 1/2 marathon, and even if I have to walk a little, I will still finish 13.1 miles. Do you hear that? I will get to the starting line, and I will finish!
I won't lie, there are days I don't want to run. Cross Training has been a great way to keep running fun because I don't run 5 days a week. I might run 3 or 4 days a week, then I throw in a day of elliptical, and day of spinning (which is the best 45 minutes of exercise I've ever experienced in my life), and 3 days a week of weights (nothing major, but enough that it is resistance training that is producing positive results). On those days I don't want to run, I think of a child like Almudena, the child that LWB has assigned to me as my inspiration. I wish I could figure out how to post her picture here because you'd fall in love with that cherubic little face. I think of Tyson, and I think of how someone gave him a cleft lip operation, and they did an amazing job! So I keep running. I don't quit, and I won't give up.
Sometimes I think Satan is really just out to get me because he knows how much good is coming from this experience. I am seeing God move in ways I never dreamed. I'm hearing God speak to me. And I know God is going to use this experience to further His will. Satan doesn't like this, and he will lie, cheat, and steal from me to make me give up. But I won't, because I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. And lastly....
"Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Phillippians 1:6

She loves sharing her beautiful smile! Now, at age 3, Almudena needs to have her cleft palate closed so she can eat more easily and her speech can develop appropriately.

Thinking about shirts
First an update: I'm doing well. My ankles and knees still "ache" but nothing that ice and ibuprofen can't handle. Finally, I was able to get past 4 miles and put in a 5 mile run on Sunday--outdoors! But today, I felt like I was dying trying to get 3 miles in on a treadmill...go figure. I add in spinning 1x a week and throw in some weigh training 3x a week.
So while on my 5 mile run on Sunday, I was deep in thought about what I will wear this Saturday. It's my first run, and it's a fun one! It's the St. Pat's day run in Seattle, and it's about 4 miles. (My husband was supposed to run it with me, but he managed to fracture his wrist in 2 places last night at work. I do have some friends to run with though.) It's St. Patrick's day, so obviously I need a green shirt. I was thinking about my shirts, and none are green and most are way too big these days. The weight is still coming off, just very slowly. I also need new pants...so you can see where this simple little thought is going...just pondering clothing options, and trying to come up with something green. I don't own any green shirts, so I start thinking I might run to a store and try to find a generic St. Patrick's Day shirt or something...
Then my thoughts switched to the half marathon in June. Oh no, what will I wear for that run? So I'm going through my options, or what I can buy, and all of a sudden, the stinking thinking starts. "You'll never make it. You won't finish." Those lovely positive thoughts, right? So then I start feeling down, like, "What am I doing? What makes me think that I'll be ready for a half-marathon by June?"
So I'm running down the road, earbuds in, jacket unzipped and fluttering around because it's not raining and I'm warm, and suddenly I feel this presence beside me. I look up, and this guy waves and says, "Hello." and he keeps running. He was a REAL runner, as he just floated pasted me. Great, another reason to feel like a total loser, right? Then I looked up, and I saw the back of his shirt...can you guess what it was? It was a GREEN ROCK AND ROLL MARATHON SHIRT!
So I'm going to take that as a sign from God that I'm on the right track! My husband says I'm reading too much into it. I say I don't believe in coincidences. How in the world could I be thinking of shirts, and suddenly I see a shirt that meshes the two runs I am signed up for? Exactly.
I booked my hotel room for the rock-n-roll marathon, so I guess that also makes it official!
And finally...I got my child I'm running for. I'll be posting more on the LWB stuff very soon.
Wish me luck on Saturday! The goal is to finish and not get run over.

I booked my hotel room for the rock-n-roll marathon, so I guess that also makes it official!
And finally...I got my child I'm running for. I'll be posting more on the LWB stuff very soon.
Wish me luck on Saturday! The goal is to finish and not get run over.

Dealing with injuries and eating
I have to start with this photo. It's my motivation today.

Ice Ice Baby.... You remember the song by Vanilla Ice, don't you? Well that has been my theme song this week. I have iced and iced, and I'm feeling pretty good.
On Tuesday I decided to try a spinning class with my 10 year old. It was 45 minutes, and I felt great doing it. But Wed. morning, I woke up with pain on the inside of my right ankle--same ankle I just got over the pain on the outside....grrrrr....
One theme I've heard from people--and books-- is, "Are you weight training?" And I'd take that deep guilty breath and reply, "Nooooooo...(voice trails off)...but I know I should."
So on Wednesday I mustered up my courage and went to the desk of the workout area and asked for some help on learning some machines. My biggest fear is being that "new" person who can't figure out how to move a seat or change the weight. This kid was great and showed me many different machines and gave me some ideas.
So Wed, I did a few reps, nothing serious, and then I jogged 3 miles. I felt as if I hadn't run in a month. I was slow, out of breath...discouraged.
And while I'm on the depressing subjects, let's talk about my eating this week. I sure wish I had read the chapter of my book that talks about poor eating during an injury...because it's true! You get depressed, so you go back to your comfort foods. For me, it's potato chips, or chips of any kind. I also indulged in those evil little cookies that those sweet little girl scouts sell. Obviously, I lost 0 pounds this week.
Thursday I decided I'd take a break, sort of. I went back to the Y to do some more weight training. Again, nothing crazy, just easing into it. And Friday I ran 3 miles again, and although still slow, my breathing was much better. I then did weights again, though focused more on my legs than arms.
Now it's Sunday, and I'm going for an outside run, something I haven't done in 2 weeks! The weather has been horrible, so I can't wait to put on my jacket and go...in fact, the sun has made it's appearance, so it's time to go!

Injured--so frustrated!
I woke up yesterday morning with a sharp shooting pain on the outside of the right heal. At first I thought it was my achilies tendon, which had me beyond depressed. But the more I felt it, I was convinced it wasn't. After some research, I think I damaged my peroneal tendon. I don't think it's horrible, but I am taking at least 5 days off. I'm icing like crazy as well.
It's mostly stiff in the morning when I wake up and when I having been on it. After I'm on it a bit, it does loosen up.
I will be careful, and this is set back...but I'm not giving up! I was up to six miles last week...I will be fine.
